sam nunn

It is interesting to see Sam Nunn being pushed as a VP candidate. Does anyone remember the central role he played is scuttling the gays in the military policy in 1993. He elevated the issue to the great detriment of the progressive agenda, enlisted Powell and other Pentagon brass in sabotaging the Clinton policy. That was a significant factor in the shaky start of a democratic presidency.on  a shaky start.
One of the earliest backers of Obama is David Geffen who was "deeply offended" that Clinton did not deliver on his promise regarding the gays. I wonder how Sam Nunn will play to that group of Obama supporters.
Edwards would certainly serve to solidify doctors against Obama even his name as AG will do the trick. Despite all the love he gets from blogs he has never caught on with the public for a reason. His voting and person record does not bear out his current positions.

I do and remarked upon that in a comments thread.  Thank you for foregrounding this in a diary.  It's very important.  I think Nunn could be an asset in a cabinet post, but as a VP he makes no sense to anyone who thinks that gay rights are civil rights on principle or politics.

Along those lines, I think Wes Clark is the best pick.

I'm genuinely surprised to see Webb being pushed as a Veep pick. Too conservative, and he doesn't strike me as temperamentally fit for the modern Veep-ship.

Just tell people Webb said no. (none / 0)

I want Clark, and I'm an obama supporter!

We need a genius on the ticket...

Please read person record as personal record and ignore the redundant "on a shaky start'

None (none / 0)

Noooo Nunn, is so conservative would defeat half the arguments against John McCain.

Amen (none / 0)

and as to "generational change", if we want to reach back to the eighties, there are better choices.

Can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure they're there.

No, Nunn would be a terrible VP pick. (none / 0)

By the way, sorry to go off topic, but is anyone watching CNN right now? I swear to god they just showed some guy from KY saying that his advice to Obama is that he needs to "quit being so black." Did anyone see this?

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.

well... it's better than SOME things he might have (none / 0)

said.

Never forget the guy attending a Harold Ford, JR, rally, saying "I've never voted for no n... black man before."

There is hope, and people can change. I do believe this.

I'm not on the Sam Nunn train (none / 0)

but Clinton supporters are being hypocrites if they bitch about Don't Ask Don't Tell. It's one thing to ask "but I thought you don't support it"

I don't and don't want someone on the ticket who did and it would be unfortunate if that happens, but to suddenly find the light in gay rights after supporting a candidate who's support for LGBT rights has been lukewarm at best makes me twitch.

Neither has been really effective in LGBT rights, so I don't expect much from either.

I wouldnt' be surprised to hear from Nunn.... (none / 0)

... that his experience as a professor, and the Millennial changing of the guard in the military since he left the Senate, had caused him to change his mind about gays in the military.

Of course,  I couldn't support him for VP barring such a change.

Sam Nunn was absolutely right on Iraq -- both times.

It took some serious stones... (none / 0)

... for Nunn to vote against it, and in the end, that vote cost him re-election.

But he was absolutely right.

Agreed (none / 0)

Nunn is being pushed by the same insiders that always push him.

However there is ZERO chance he will be on the Democratic now or anytime. And I would hope he does no more then advising Obama on nuclear issues.

Sam Nunn is a 70 year old reactionary Democrat. He would be a unacceptable vice presidential nominee.

Nunn Before Webb (none / 0)

The same arguments used for supporting Jim Webb for VP are equally compelling regarding Sam Nunn--military and national security background, moderate/conservative credentials, etc. We also don't lose a senate seat by picking Nunn, and I don't take it on faith that Webb could definitely deliver Virginia--I think only Mark Warner could do that, and I don't want to lose him as a senate candidate.

Further, with Nunn's support in GA and the energized African American vote there, the state would be made competitive. I don't expect the dem ticket to win it, but it would be much closer because of the combination of those two factors.

I take it as a given that the VP choice will not sit well with most progressives, as Obama has to try to reach out toward the right and center for the GE. Considering all that, I have no great objections to Nunn as the running mate.

his words... from the hill.com (none / 0)

"I'm not really interested. That's all I want to say"

That sounds like "don't want it" to me. ;-)

Re: sam nunn (none / 0)

You know what? I don't care.
Barack Obama has to say and do what it takes to win. I'm sick o high minded policies that makes us lose all the time. Being a great president means you will creat enemies and not please everyone.

I'm sick of losing.
